Mo J Takes Creative Control as Rapper, Producer, and Mixer on His 12-Track Project

With hands-on production, self-mixing, outside beatmakers, and unexpected musical influences, Mo J is exploring the possibilities of independent music creation.

In today’s independent music landscape, artists have more opportunities than ever to shape their own sound from the ground up. For Mo J, the rapper and producer from Ona, West Virginia, that creative independence is a major part of his approach.

Born Nehemiah Roberts, Mo J serves as executive producer of his 12-track project, taking responsibility for the overall creative direction while handling production and mixing duties on numerous records.

The tracklist demonstrates an artist willing to change direction, rethink arrangements, and experiment with different sounds rather than relying on one established formula.

Building Songs From the Ground Up

Several tracks feature Mo J producing and mixing his own material, including “throwin,” “ROCKSTVR,” “Butterflies,” “we still good,” “I’m so comfortable,” and “DMX.”

This level of involvement gives him opportunities to shape how each song develops, from its instrumental foundation to its final presentation.

Other tracks bring in outside production. “New IG” uses a beat by Lil Pay, “how u know me?” was produced by tenguzavr, and “LIGHTSHOW” and “Seaside” feature beats by whoinvitedryan. The bonus track “Body” was produced by KJtheproducer, while “One Thing” credits PK and Mo J in production.

These contributions create a balance between Mo J’s own production work and the ideas of other beatmakers.

The Evolution of “ROCKSTVR”

One of the clearest examples of Mo J’s creative process is “ROCKSTVR.”

The track was initially conceived as a drumless interlude. However, the 808s sounded too good to leave out, prompting him to rethink the arrangement and give the song a more upbeat foundation.

The finished concept pairs energetic production with lyrics that carry a more somber message. This contrast becomes part of the track’s identity, showing how a change in production can transform the direction of a song.

For independent producers, the ability to recognize when an initial idea needs to evolve can be just as important as the original inspiration.

Drawing From Different Musical Worlds

Mo J’s production choices also reveal the breadth of his influences.

On “throwin,” he describes taking inspiration from a melody he heard in connection with an unreleased Lil Uzi Vert song and putting his own spin on the idea. “New IG” similarly pays tribute to Lil Uzi Vert, with an opening influenced by the flow of “Bigger Than Life.”

On “we still good,” Mo J takes a different route by sampling a gospel melody associated with Tye Tribbett. The choice reflects his upbringing in church and his continued connection to that environment.

These examples demonstrate how contemporary rap can draw from multiple musical traditions, with each influence serving a different purpose.

Maintaining Variety Across the Tracklist

The project includes records with different moods and creative objectives.

“how u know me?” reconnects Mo J with his earliest released song, giving longtime supporters a reference point for his development. “I’m so comfortable” reflects his growing confidence and desire to keep experimenting. “Seaside” serves as a switch-up intended to keep fans guessing about what he might release next.

The inclusion of “Body” as a bonus track further expands the collection.

Rather than presenting a narrowly defined sound, Mo J uses the project to explore different possibilities while remaining closely involved in how the music is made.

Independent Creativity at the Center

Mo J’s role as executive producer ties the project together. His combination of rapping, beat selection, production, and mixing illustrates the many responsibilities an independent artist can take on while building a catalog.

The project also highlights the importance of collaboration. Outside producers contribute different instrumental ideas, while Mo J’s involvement in the overall direction helps create a connected body of work.

As he continues experimenting, his hands-on approach offers a foundation for future releases and further development as a recording artist.

For listeners interested in the creative process behind independent rap, Mo J’s project provides a look at how production decisions, musical influences, and personal experiences can come together to shape an artist’s sound.
