Sighmon‘s music is built on honesty. Blending melodic songwriting with self-produced instrumentals, the Los Angeles-based artist has spent years refining a sound that feels both intimate and atmospheric. What started in a college dorm room making beats for friends has evolved into a deeply personal creative process centered on capturing emotion in the moment. With the release of “Soldier” and more music on the way, Sighmon reflects on his journey, the experiences that shaped his artistry, and why staying true to himself has become the foundation of everything he creates.
How did you first get started making music, and what were some of your early inspirations that pushed you in that direction?
I first started making beats because all my friends liked to freestyle, and I didn’t know how to rap yet, so I wanted to be the guy that made the beats for them. Once I learned how to do that, I got more curious about what I would sound like rapping on them. I’d say J. Cole, like Born Sinner J. Cole, and Tha Carter IV Lil Wayne were heavy influences on me wanting to start making music.
You first started making music in a college dorm room back in 2017—what do you remember most about those early sessions, and how did they shape your approach today?
I was in school for football, so I remember getting out of practice or class, goin’ back to my room with my Lenovo laptop & using a DAW called MPC Essentials that you get with the AKAI MIDI keyboard and using free Looperman samples, learning how to chop drums and record myself. Also inviting the homies over to freestyle over the shitty beats I was making, haha. Those days definitely made me want to prioritize the feeling of the moment in whatever I’m making, capturing the energy.
Looking back at your journey from Naples to Los Angeles, what’s been the biggest shift in how you create music or view yourself as an artist?
I definitely take it more serious, still having fun with it but more intentional, and more conscious of time and trying to be as efficient as possible. I never try to force anything anymore. I can feel if it’s not happening, imma set whatever it is aside and start fresh.
“Soldier” feels emotionally reflective and atmospheric. What was the main feeling or moment that inspired the track?
I wrote it about the feeling of being drained and worn down, whether it be from a long day or how you are mentally/physically, but still being there for your people, still putting in that effort to be present with the ones you care for.
The production on “Soldier” blends textured guitars, bass, and atmospheric layers. How did you approach building the sound for “Soldier”?
I started with just trying to play a couple cool chords on guitar and chopping a loop out of it. I was feeling kinda off that day, so I came up with that. Then I found an acoustic sample and layered it, got the drums and made the bass line, and put another harsher guitar over the hook, then threw some ear candy moments throughout so it didn’t feel like the same thing over & over.
You’ve spent time doing open mics, local shows, and independent studio work. How have those experiences influenced your confidence and songwriting?
It’s just reassured me mainly. & definitely have been on many late nights/early mornings watching mixing and production videos to be able to make something on the spot or being around people that are better than me to learn something from.
When you’re starting a new song, what usually comes first for you—melody, lyrics, or production?
90% of the time, I get a strong melody first, then write the song, and then build the production around it. Lately have been doing drums first, & that’s been a different but cool process.
Outside of music, what kinds of experiences, environments, or habits tend to feed your creativity the most?
Going to the beach helps me a lot, makes me feel grounded when I don’t know what to write about. Also doing new things or trying new food spots I’ve never been to brings something outta me.
What’s coming up next for you on the horizon in music?
I’m dropping 2 more songs, then a project by the end of the summer that I think is the most myself I’ve put forward in the music I’ve made so far, so I’m excited to share that.
