Joshua Turchin is an actor, singer/songwriter, and producer. His newest show at Below 54 in New York City is set for July and Joshua will be inviting all his Tik Tok friends to join in on the fun! Tik Tok Takes Broadway will be a fun evening full of music and comedy. I love this interview with Joshua about his upcoming show as well as some behind the scenes info.
1.Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming show at Below 54.
My upcoming show on July 25th, “TikTok Takes Broadway”, features many of my viral TikTok composer and performer friends as we take the audience inside the creative process. It will include songs from brand-new musicals, songwriting challenges, some of our viral songs, and impressions!
2. How do you prepare for a live show?
Before a live show, I typically begin by getting all of the sheet music in order. Afterwards, I schedule a few rehearsals with the cast so I have a chance to play through their songs with them a couple of times. On the day of the show, we have a short tech rehearsal. Finally, it’s showtime!
3. How many rehearsals will you have prior to doing a big show at Below 54?
Before doing a big show at 54 Below, I typically have anywhere between 2 to 5 rehearsals with the cast (counting the tech rehearsal).
4. How much of the show is scripted and how much is improv?
The whole show will be mostly scripted, but we always try to throw in some improv moments.
5. What is the craziest thing that has happened to you during a live show?
When I was younger, I was a swing in the Broadway national tour of ” A Christmas Story the Musical”. During the very first preview, I was ready to go on during the opening number. After the opening number was over, the entire wardrobe team and the associate director came running towards me, telling me I was going to go on as one of the main characters, Schwartz, without any rehearsal. I ended up going on for the character 9 more times during the run!
6. What do you most love about performing live?
I love being able to play with the audience, improvising and changing my comedic timing based on how the audience is receiving certain jokes.
7. What do you hope your fans will take away from your show?
I hope that my fans have a fun time and learn more about some of my incredible TikTok friends!
8. What are your goals for 2023?
My goals for 2023 are to write as much music as possible and keep creating and performing.
