Choosing Careers and Defining The Path Of Success: Gary Dean Gullett

Some individuals devote decades to honing their skills in a single profession. Gary Dean Gullett, however, has built a life defined by many careers. Throughout his life, he has worked as a businessman, basketball referee, wildlife photographer, teacher, safari operator, pilot, and conservationist. The common thread throughout these roles has been his curiosity about the world and his willingness to take on challenges beyond the ordinary.

Gullett was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, and raised in central Iowa. From a young age, he was introduced to the outdoors, sports, and the importance of family values. Spending weekends hunting pheasants and quail on his grandparents’ farm sparked his lifelong love of nature. Alongside sports, he also developed an interest in coin collecting and eventually earned national recognition for his numismatic achievements.

Athletics also played an important role in his youth. He competed successfully in various sports and was named Senior Athlete of the Year in tennis. This competitive spirit later carried into his long career as a basketball official.

After enrolling at the University of Northern Iowa, Gullett studied business management while also developing interests in photography and aviation. Over time, he earned both his pilot’s license and scuba diving certification, reflecting his adventurous personality long before entering the travel industry.

His professional career began in corporate America, where he worked with several Fortune 100 companies, including John Deere, Westinghouse Electric, United Technologies, and Motorola. During these years, he became involved in increasingly complex technical and international projects. At Motorola, for example, he held positions related to international supplier management and business operations, helping oversee programs connected to security and quality management.

Gullett also worked on military aerospace projects involving aircraft and defense systems such as the AV-8B Harrier, V-22 Osprey, and F-16 Fighting Falcon. This work demanded precision, efficiency, and technical expertise, qualities that later contributed to his success in other fields as well.

In addition to his corporate accomplishments, Gullett built a respected career as a basketball official. For more than thirty years, he officiated high school and college basketball games across Iowa, Ohio, and Illinois. His dedication earned him assignments at the Illinois High School Boys State Finals in 2008 and 2009.

In 2012, he was named Illinois Boys Basketball Official of the Year, recognizing years of professionalism and consistency on the court. Later, in 2025, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame as an official by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Beyond officiating games, Gullett also helped train future officials. For many years, he taught basketball officiating classes and served as a clinician and lecturer, helping younger officials better understand the game.

Even while advancing in sports and business, photography remained one of his greatest passions. His wildlife and landscape photography has appeared in magazines, newspapers, educational publications, and even the Mayo Clinic calendar. His work behind the camera also allowed him to travel to some of the world’s most remote destinations.

That passion eventually led to another chapter of his life. In 1999, he founded Adventure Safari Network, a travel company focused on tours to destinations known for wildlife and adventure. What began as a personal venture later grew into a family-run enterprise involving his wife and daughter.

Gullett’s safaris differ from traditional tours because they place a strong emphasis on education and conservation. Through the Adventure Safari Network Foundation, he also speaks to students about environmental awareness and international experiences, often sharing foreign coins and photographs from his travels to inspire curiosity about the world.

What sets Gary Dean Gullett’s story apart is not simply the number of careers he has pursued, but how each one reflects a different aspect of his personality, including discipline, curiosity, leadership, and adventure. Every role came with its own demands and challenges, yet he approached each with the same level of dedication.

Gullett’s life serves as a reminder that success does not always come from following a single path. Sometimes, it is defined by the willingness to explore many opportunities and fully embrace each experience along the way.
