Omari Alltimer has spent the better part of the last seven years in Los Angeles figuring out what it means to be himself. His new EP, Screwdriver Sunset, produced by Professor Payne, is the result of that process.
The five-track project is rooted in California, but it isn’t simply a tribute to the place. For Alltimer, LA became the backdrop for a period of personal change—one that included good memories, difficult experiences, and lessons that ultimately brought him closer to his own identity.
When he first arrived in Los Angeles in October 2019, Alltimer wanted to be known as Ois4 Omari. Over time, that identity shifted. The person emerging from those years was simply Omari AllTimer, and Screwdriver Sunset serves as a snapshot of that realization.
Musically, the EP leans warm, soulful, and unhurried. Professor Payne’s production gives Alltimer plenty of room to work, creating a sound that feels especially suited to the project’s reflective subject matter without becoming overly heavy.
The opening title track, “screwdriver sunsets,” sets the tone with soulful production and measured lyricism. Alltimer sounds assured as he reflects on where he’s been, continuing the thoughtful writing that has become a defining part of projects like Research Forest and Transatlantic Wave Trade.
From there, the EP moves through several different moods. “porcupine” takes a hazier, more atmospheric approach, while “solidation” pairs wistful keyboards, bass, and organic percussion with some of Alltimer’s more contemplative writing. “greenleaf” brightens things up with shimmering production and an infectious, relaxed flow.
“pins & needles” brings the project to a close with a more nostalgic feel. Its soulful backdrop gives Alltimer space to sit with the past, ending the EP on a note that feels reflective without being overly sentimental.
There is a simplicity to what Alltimer is trying to capture here. Screwdriver Sunset is about appreciating what life has given him, including the parts he wouldn’t necessarily choose to repeat. It’s about recognizing that the difficult moments can carry their own value once enough time has passed.
After seven years in California, Screwdriver Sunset finds Omari Alltimer looking back with a clearer sense of who he is—and sounding comfortable with where he ended up.
