mary sue takes listeners on an immersive sonic journey with ‘Voice Memos From A Winter In China’

April 2, 2024

mary sue is an artist that remains difficult to put in a box. With a penchant for expressive, engaging experimentation and heartfelt, relatable lyricism- he’s a musician that stands out in today’s landscape for his character-rich approach. His latest offering ‘Voice Memos From A Winter In China’ follows up a prolific streak of well-received releases with a hazy, lo-fi- yet focused- drop that draws from his experiences touring in China. With crystalline, wintery soundscapes and engagingly personal lyricism that read intimately like a journal, sue has created something special with his latest project ‘Voice Memos From A Winter In China’. Patient, hypnotic grooves, vibrant samples, and vulnerable lyricism characterize this new project, with standouts like “Expired Toffee”, “Sortaa”, and more.

With a prolific discography beyond his years, spanning from mixtape, collaborations to Soundcloud loosies; Singaporean rapper-producer mary sue’s sound of sludgy, fractured sample loops and stream of conscious writing has continued evolving with every upload. Straying from conventional song structures and standard studio recording, sue’s releases are better understood as cut fragments of a larger whole; soundtracked voice memos of introspection. Releasing music with London based hip-hop collective “Higher Self”; his 2022 debut album KISSES OF LIFE, garnered critical praise from various platforms such as NME, LIFTED Asia and HipHop-DX. It was included in Bandcamp’s “Top 10 Hip Hop Albums of 2022”. 2023 saw Sue featured on Bandcamps Best Hip Hop releases again with his collaborative album with UK beat-maker Psychedelic Ensemble “CACOPHONOUS DIGRESSIONS, A RECORD OF A MOMENT IN TIME”.
