Tamoghna Dey: A Contemporary Indian Writer Building a Literary Voice Across Borders

Literary journeys rarely follow a predictable path. For some writers, the road to publication begins with formal literary education or an early decision to pursue writing as a profession. For Tamoghna Dey, the journey took shape differently. Academic ambition, an unexpected interruption, personal challenges and an evolving relationship with words gradually led Dey towards a life increasingly defined by literature.

Today, Tamoghna Dey is emerging as an Indian author and poet with a growing body of work that includes poetry, short stories, articles and published books. What makes the journey particularly notable is its international dimension. Dey’s writing has found space in literary publications and platforms in countries including the United States, Scotland and the United Kingdom, creating a literary footprint that extends well beyond India.

An Academic Beginning

Born on 17 February 1997, Tamoghna Dey demonstrated a strong interest in education during the early years of life. Dey completed H.S.L.C. with 78.83 percent and Higher Secondary with 70.8 percent before completing a Bachelor of Science degree with a 7.2 CGPA.

The next step was higher education at Royal Global University, where Dey enrolled in an M.Sc. programme. The academic journey, however, was interrupted after the author developed cellulitis and was compelled to discontinue the programme.

Such an interruption could easily have altered the direction of an individual’s ambitions. In Dey’s case, it became part of a much more personal transformation. With conventional academic plans disrupted, literature increasingly became a space for reflection and creative expression.

When Writing Became a Way Forward

The development of Tamoghna Dey as a writer has been closely connected with personal experience.

Dey has spoken openly about struggles with insomnia, anxiety and depression. Rather than keeping those experiences separate from creative life, the author has allowed them to inform an exploration of emotion, identity, hope and the complexities of ordinary human experience.

Poetry became one of the most natural forms through which these thoughts could be expressed. Short stories and articles provided other avenues for examining ideas and observations.

There is a certain honesty in writing that emerges from lived experience. Dey’s literary journey reflects that relationship between life and literature. The objective is not simply to tell a story but to give shape to feelings, thoughts and observations that can often remain unspoken.

A Literary Voice That Crossed Borders

One of the most significant developments in Dey’s career has been the publication of the author’s work internationally.

A short story by Tamoghna Dey appeared in Synchronous Chaos Magazine, a literary publication based in California. Another short story was published by Friday Flash Fiction in Scotland. Dey’s six word fiction was also selected by Six Word DougWeller in the United Kingdom.

These publications are significant because they demonstrate the versatility required to work across different literary forms. A short story allows a writer room to develop characters, atmosphere and narrative. Six word fiction requires an entirely different discipline, where meaning has to be compressed into an extremely small space.

Moving between these forms has become part of Dey’s creative journey.

For an Indian writer building an international literary presence, such publications also provide an opportunity to participate in conversations taking place across different literary communities and cultures.

From Writing Discipline to Published Books

The journey from an individual piece of writing to a published book requires persistence. Tamoghna Dey has taken that step through participation in BookLeaf Publishing’s 21 Day Writing Challenge.

Dey participated in the challenge twice and subsequently published books that are distributed globally through BookLeaf Publishing.

The experience illustrates another important element of the author’s development. Literary recognition may come through awards and publications, but the foundation of an author’s career is often the less visible discipline of continuing to write.

For Dey, that discipline has resulted in a growing body of published work and an opportunity to reach readers beyond immediate literary circles.

Both published titles were also nominated for The Legacy of Literature by The Literature Times, adding further recognition to the author’s work.

Poetry at the Centre

While Dey’s literary interests extend across several forms, poetry remains an important part of the author’s creative identity.

Tamoghna Dey received the 21st Century Emily Dickinson Award twice, recognition associated with poetic expression and originality. The author’s poetry has also received recognition from Spry Magazine, while another poem was published in the Poetry Nation Contest 2022.

Dey was additionally named a Star Poet by African Giant Poetry.

Recognition has also come through participation in International Mother Language Day activities, where Dey secured first position. The achievement carries particular relevance for a writer whose creative identity is deeply connected with language.

These experiences have helped establish poetry as more than an occasional form of expression. It has become one of the central components of Dey’s literary work.

Recognition Across Literary Platforms

The author’s creative journey has continued to attract recognition through competitions, publications and literary organisations.

Dey received the Five Most Popular Article Award from Mumbai based literary organisation Monomousumi and was also awarded two Praiseworthy Certificates for article writing.

The author was shortlisted in The Story Vault Level 1 and was selected by Six Word DougWeller in 2024. These achievements demonstrate an ability to work across both conventional and highly condensed forms of storytelling.

In recent years, Dey has also received several broader recognitions, including inclusion in the India Book of Records 2025, Education Excellence Council recognition from the World Excellence Council, Vishwa Ratna Gaurav Samman 2026 and recognition through the Cherry Book Awards in the Author category.

Each recognition forms another chapter in a literary journey that has developed gradually through participation, persistence and creative output.

An Author With Interests Beyond Literature

The story of Tamoghna Dey is not confined entirely to books and poetry.

The author holds a Certificate of Logical Aptitude, reflecting an interest in analytical abilities alongside creative pursuits. Dey also cleared the written examination for the Assam Apex Bank State Competitive Exam and reached the interview stage.

These experiences provide an interesting contrast to the author’s literary work. The same individual who spends time exploring emotion and imagination through poetry has also pursued academic and competitive opportunities requiring analytical preparation and discipline.

This combination contributes to a broader understanding of Dey’s journey. Literature exists alongside other intellectual interests rather than in isolation.

The Meaning Behind the Journey

Awards and publications can provide visible milestones in an author’s career. Yet the deeper significance of Tamoghna Dey’s journey lies in what happened between those milestones.

The discontinuation of higher education following illness could have brought an important chapter of life to a premature conclusion. Instead, it became part of a transition towards writing. Personal difficulties became subjects of reflection. Reflection developed into poems, stories and articles. Continued writing led to publication, and publication gradually opened doors to literary communities beyond India.

That progression illustrates the unpredictable nature of a creative career.

A writer’s journey is rarely measured only by the number of books published or awards received. It is also measured by the development of a distinctive voice and the willingness to continue creating when circumstances change.

Looking Towards the Next Chapter

Tamoghna Dey’s literary journey remains in progress.

With published books, international literary appearances, poetry recognitions and a growing record of participation across literary platforms, Dey continues to develop as an Indian writer with an increasingly international outlook.

The author’s work reflects an interest in the human side of literature, particularly the emotions and experiences that connect people despite differences in geography and background.

That may ultimately become the most enduring quality of Dey’s writing journey. Literature begins with an individual voice, but its reach depends on whether that voice can create recognition in another person.

Tamoghna Dey’s story demonstrates how a disrupted academic path can lead towards an unexpected creative destination, and how persistence can gradually transform private experiences into public literature.

The journey from aspiring student to published Indian author and internationally recognised poet has already produced several important chapters. There is, however, considerably more of the story still to be written.
