When John H. Dozier became president of Columbia College in 2023, he brought a leadership philosophy centered on preparing students for both professional success and meaningful engagement with the world around them. At the same time, his administration has placed growing emphasis on student leadership, wellness, and the college’s relationship with the surrounding Midlands community.
Connecting Liberal Arts Education With Real World Problems
One of the defining elements of Dozier’s approach is his emphasis on developing students who can think critically, evaluate information, and solve complex problems. He sees a liberal arts education as preparation not only for academic achievement but also for addressing challenges students will encounter throughout their careers and communities.

The “On the Rise” vision has also brought changes to the college’s academic organization. Under Dozier’s leadership, Columbia College restructured its five academic divisions into four schools: Allied Health, Business, Education, and Arts and Sciences.
The structure is designed to create stronger connections between academic programs and regional workforce needs. Allied Health responds to healthcare demand, Business supports preparation for commercial and organizational careers, Education maintains a connection to schools and teacher preparation, and Arts and Sciences preserves the broader intellectual foundation of the institution.
This model allows the college to respond to employment trends while maintaining the value of a liberal arts education. Students can develop specialized knowledge while strengthening the analytical and interpersonal abilities needed to adapt as their careers evolve.
Making Wellness Part of Student Success
For Dozier and his wife, Victoria Dozier, student success also extends beyond academics and career preparation. They are deeply committed to whole person wellness, with attention to physical, mental, and social well being.
Together, the Doziers have supported a range of initiatives intended to make wellness a visible part of campus life. These efforts include the creation of a student wellness center, improvements to the Koala Zen Room, and the installation of hammocks and other outdoor spaces designed to give students opportunities to relax and recharge.
The campus environment has also been enhanced through the revitalization of the greenhouse and improvements to the dining hall, including expanded healthier food options. Yoga and other wellness activities have been incorporated into the student calendar, giving students additional ways to maintain balance while managing the demands of college life.
These efforts reflect a broader understanding of student development. Academic achievement is important, but students also need supportive environments that encourage healthy routines, social connection, and personal resilience.
Taking Wellness Beyond Campus
The Doziers’ commitment to wellness also extends into the wider community through the annual Wellness in Action Festival. The initiative gives Columbia College students opportunities to share health and wellness education with K to 12 students, families, and residents in the surrounding community.
The festival represents the connection Dozier seeks to establish between education and public service. Students are not simply recipients of knowledge. They are given opportunities to use their education, communication abilities, and leadership skills to address issues that affect other people.
This philosophy is also reflected in Wellness in Action, a broader collaborative public health effort focused on diabetes and cardiovascular health disparities in Columbia’s 29203 ZIP code. The initiative involves partners including Prisma Health, Richland County, the City of Columbia, local schools, and nonprofit organizations.
Strengthening the Midlands Connection
Community engagement has become a significant part of Dozier’s presidency. Columbia College has expanded relationships with local governments, healthcare providers, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and other community groups throughout the Midlands.
These partnerships create opportunities for service learning, volunteerism, experiential education, and workforce development. They also give students practical settings in which to apply the skills they develop in the classroom.
For Dozier, this connection between campus and community reinforces the purpose of higher education. Students can learn how to communicate, collaborate, make decisions, and solve problems while working on issues that have tangible consequences beyond the college.
Looking Toward 2030
Dozier’s leadership received a significant vote of confidence in July 2026, when the Columbia College Board of Trustees unanimously extended his contract for four years, through July 2030. The extension provides continuity as the college continues implementing the “On the Rise” strategy and developing its academic and community priorities.
The next phase of his presidency will provide an opportunity to build on the changes already underway, from academic restructuring and workforce preparation to student wellness and community engagement.
Dozier’s vision for Columbia College ultimately places education within a broader framework. Students are expected to develop strong academic foundations, but also the critical thinking, problem solving, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills needed to navigate a changing workforce.
