For Simone Feroci, the bass has never been merely a supporting instrument. The Italian-born, Los Angeles-based musician has spent two decades exploring what the instrument can do, and his latest single, “BassQuakes,” pushes that experimentation into a distinctly futuristic direction.
Released on September 8, 2026, “BassQuakes” is an aggressive collision of funk, rock and science-fiction-inspired soundscapes. A serrated bass groove sits at the center of the track, surrounded by pounding drums, distorted guitars and synthesizers. The effect is intense and cinematic, evoking the feeling of being launched into deep space with no obvious route back.
Feroci’s fascination with the universe provided much of the inspiration. “I’ve always been fascinated by space, sci-fi literature and the scale of the universe,” he says. He wanted the track to capture the imagined experience of a spaceship crashing onto an unknown planet, and the music embraces that sense of danger and unpredictability.
The bass performance is particularly unconventional. Rather than treating slap bass as a polished technical showcase, Feroci uses the technique to create a harsher, more forceful attack. His thumb effectively takes the role of a pick, giving the instrument a percussive quality that drives the entire composition.
That willingness to approach music from different angles has characterized Feroci’s career. Born in Parma, Italy, in 1987, he received his first bass guitar at the age of 12 and quickly began performing with local bands. Over the following years, his career took him across Italy, the UK and the United States, including performances and recording work at renowned locations such as Abbey Road Studios and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. He has also appeared at major arenas and venues, including Disneyland California and Dignity Health Sports Park.
Now based in Long Beach, California, Feroci continues to work as a bassist and producer, collaborating with artists both locally and internationally.
The visual world surrounding “BassQuakes” adds another layer to the project. Feroci’s videos feature exaggerated characters, pop-culture references, video-game and movie Easter eggs, and flashes of intentionally nonsensical writing. The playful chaos mirrors the track itself.
Available across major streaming platforms, “BassQuakes” presents Simone Feroci not simply as a bassist, but as an artist using the instrument as a vehicle for experimentation, storytelling and sonic exploration.
