Bug Nelson has returned with a fresh album called Combustible Body Armor, produced by Cusho. Before he ever stepped into a recording booth, Nelson was the kid filling the margins of his math notebooks with rhymes instead of formulas. Storytelling came naturally, and that early instinct for finding humor in the everyday still drives his music. His delivery is famously unhurried; he raps with a casual, almost offhand posture, but the writing underneath is sharp, deliberate, and packed with clever left-field punchlines. He never sounds like he’s trying to impress you, which, paradoxically, is exactly why it works.
That refusal to play the usual games is the driving force behind his new full-length record, Combustible Body Armor. Entirely produced by Cusho, the album ignores modern hip-hop formulas in favor of warm, dust-caked samples, heavy bass, and a lived-in, cohesive atmosphere. Rather than playing like a random collection of single attempts, it feels like stepping into a specific, slightly surreal world.
The chemistry between the two is obvious from the start. On “assorted luggage” (featuring Josh Alias), Nelson glides over hypnotic, jazz-tinged loops with a relaxed timing that makes even his weirdest concepts sound completely natural. The energy shifts on “WKUK,” where Nelson and Oatmeal Jenkins trade rugged, heavy-grooving bars, before floating into “Ole Larry’s Bones”—a track carried by smoky keys and organic percussion that lets Nelson display his knack for riding subtle beats.
Elsewhere, Cooper joins on “Lorem ipsum,” pulling the project into darker, murkier territory, while “JUMPSCARE!” uses lush, atmospheric textures to house some of the sharpest writing on the record. By the time the project lands on its closer, “CANNONBALL RICHARDS,” the sound pivots one last time. Anchored by gritty guitars and a heavy, driving bassline, Nelson delivers a focused, direct performance that brings the whole album to a satisfying finish.
If you appreciate the sample-heavy, left-field lane carved out by artists like Action Bronson, Boldy James, Roc Marciano, or The Alchemist, Combustible Body Armor will feel right at home in your rotation. Yet Nelson’s distinct eye for detail keeps the project from feeling like a tribute act. He isn’t kicking down any doors or begging for attention—he and Cusho just trusted their instincts, cooked up a great record, and let the music do the talking.
