Some musicians build a career on a single, linear track. Angela Chambers built hers by wandering. From the flatlands of rural Eastern North Carolina to the concrete nightscape of Berlin, the singer, model, and multi-instrumentalist has spent over a decade quietly gathering stories, surviving close calls, and honing a sound that feels entirely untethered to modern trends.
Her latest release—a striking cover of Fred Neil’s 1969 staple “Everybody’s Talkin’”—acts as a vessel for all that mileage.
Chambers’ journey didn’t start in a glossy studio; it began in Elizabeth City, listening to her father’s record collection and watching her brother handle a guitar. That early exposure to raw American roots music stayed with her, even as her path took wild, unpredictable turns. A degree in film school led to a spur-of-the-moment cross-country drive to San Francisco, which eventually bled into years spent in New York’s garment district and touring Europe with the Italo-Disco outfit Dust. By 2013, an artist residency landed her in Berlin, where she remained for ten years, sinking deep into the city’s avant-garde pulse.
That nomadic, multi-hyphenate lifestyle—spanning screen acting, fashion syncs for Vogue Arabia, and orchestral pop collaborations—could easily feel scattered in the hands of a lesser artist. But Chambers binds it together with her distinct vocal presence and technical skill as a flautist. Her music sits at a rare crossroads where the theatricality of Annie Lennox and David Bowie meets the dusty, heart-on-a-sleeve soul of Janis Joplin.
Her rendition of “Everybody’s Talkin’,” cut alongside veteran producer Bruce Sugar in Los Angeles, carries a weight that only comes after living through the fire. Coming off a harrowing near-death experience and an intense period of recovery, Chambers approaches the classic song not with nostalgia, but with a deeply personal sense of clarity.
Where past interpretations leaned heavily on breezy folk strumming, Chambers and Sugar transform the track into an expansive, cinematic piece. Rich, graceful guitar work weaves through lush string arrangements and a grounded rhythm section, creating an atmospheric backdrop for Chambers’ rich, evocative vocals.
