Emerging hip-hop artist JAYY is stepping into the spotlight with purpose, passion, and a story beyond the music. His latest single, “How I’m Coming,” released on March 27th, offers listeners a bold look at his mindset shaped by resilience, self-belief, and real-life experience.
Behind the confident energy of his music is a journey that shaped who he is today.
For JAYY, music has always been a part of his life. Inspired by legends and emotional storytellers like Drake, Tupac Shakur, and Rod Wave, his connection to music started in childhood. Hearing songs on the radio during car rides, watching music videos on TV, or listening in stores all helped him imagine himself as the artist behind those sounds.
By 13, JAYY was already writing his own music. Without a studio, he focused on what he could control: his pen. His drive grew stronger. At 16, he started producing his own beats, determined not to rely on YouTube instrumentals. Even when his early work wasn’t perfect, he stayed dedicated.
That commitment required sacrifice. JAYY skipped his grade 11 and 12 proms to focus on music. While others celebrated, he stayed focused, sometimes bringing his laptop into the school bathroom during breaks to find a quiet place to work. People didn’t always understand, but for him, it was about more than opinions. It was about purpose.
He started creating his sound on BandLab and later moved to FL Studio, where his production skills really began to grow.
But the journey also had its darkest moments.
At 20, JAYY struggled with depression hidden behind smiles and laughter. During that time, he turned to heavy weed smoking and vaping to cope, and his motivation and dreams slowly faded. The vision of stardom he once had was replaced by something much heavier.
Support changed everything for him.
With encouragement from those around him, JAYY made a difficult but life-saving change. While taking medication, he gave up substances, leading to a challenging period of sobriety. He turned inward and replaced those habits with journaling. Over time, journaling brought him back to music, songwriting, expression, and ultimately, himself.
The withdrawals were tough, but the results were worth it.
Now, he uses that pain to fuel his music.
His latest single, “How I’m Coming,” shows his determination and growth, with a confident, high-energy sound that proves he’s focused. JAYY is also getting ready to share another side of himself with his upcoming release “NWSYA” (Never Wanna See You Again), which drops this Friday, April 24th.
While his recent track shows his presence, “NWSYA” explores the emotional side of relationships, heartbreak, and letting go. It’s a song that speaks directly to listeners who have been through similar experiences. It is raw, honest, and deeply relatable.
JAYY’s music is not just about the vibe; it is about connection. Every lyric shares part of his journey and reminds listeners they are not alone in what they are facing.
With consistency, versatility, and authenticity, JAYY is quickly making his own path in hip-hop. From teaching himself to overcoming personal struggles, his story is one of resilience, and it is only just beginning.
