From Hospitality to Writing: How T. Dench Patel Found Her Voice

T. Dench Patel’s journey from the world of hospitality to the serene world of writing is a story of resilience, adventure, and self-discovery. Born Tulsi Mohanlal Patel in Lenasia, Johannesburg, her path to becoming a celebrated author was anything but conventional.

Early Days in Hospitality

Patel’s foray into the professional world began with a focus on hospitality. After completing her studies in Hotel Operations and Management and Marketing Management, she left South Africa in 2000 to go to the United Kingdom. There, she worked as a waitress, navigating the challenges of a new country and culture. Her experiences in hospitality not only honed her skills in customer service but also provided her with a unique perspective on human behavior and interaction.

A Global Adventure

Patel’s career took her across various countries, including the United States, Spain, and Switzerland. Each destination offered new experiences and insights, enriching her worldview. In 2003, she worked on a cruise liner, where she obtained a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft. Her time at sea, dealing with diverse people and unpredictable situations added layers to her understanding of life and its complexities.

Finding Her Voice

Despite the demanding nature of her jobs, Patel nurtured a passion for storytelling. It was during a challenging period in Switzerland, working at a hiking and ski resort, that she began writing her first novel. The quiet, picturesque surroundings of Saas-Fee gave her the space to reflect and write. Within four weeks, she had completed the draft of “The South African: True Colours.”

Language and Literature

Patel’s multilingual abilities have significantly influenced her writing. Fluent in some of her nine languages, she pursued intensive courses in Spanish, French, and German. This linguistic diversity enriches her narratives, allowing her to create authentic, multicultural characters and settings.

Themes of Tradition and Modernity

Patel’s novels, including “The South African: True Colours” and “The South African: Roamer,” often explore the tension between tradition and modernity. Her protagonists navigate complex cultural landscapes, reflecting Patel’s own experiences. These themes resonate with readers who grapple with maintaining their cultural heritage while embracing contemporary life.
