From South Carolina Roots to Netflix Stardom: Nate Bynum’s Journey in “Outer Banks”

Veteran actor Nate Bynum has made a triumphant return to his South Carolina roots with a compelling recurring role in Netflix’s hit series “Outer Banks.” As the mysterious groundskeeper Demp, Bynum brings a menacing presence to the show’s fourth season, marking his first professional acting work in his home state in over four decades.

The Columbia native, who has built an impressive career spanning both academia and entertainment, portrays a character that showcases his remarkable range as an performer. “He was totally different for me, and I loved it,” Bynum shares about his role as Demp, a brooding figure who guards an eerie island mansion in the latest season of the teen drama phenomenon.

From Humble Beginnings to Hollywood Success

Raised by his grandparents near Roosevelt Village in Columbia, Bynum’s journey into acting began unexpectedly. Despite being a varsity football player, he found himself drawn to the arts through the encouragement of dedicated teachers who recognized his potential. After graduating from Columbia High School in 1977, his first on-camera experience came through police training videos for South Carolina ETV.

Building an impressive career spanning both education and entertainment, Bynum became a pioneering figure as the first Black professor in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas theater department. During his 25-year tenure, he founded the school’s camera acting program while maintaining an active presence in the entertainment industry.

A Breakthrough Role in “Outer Banks”

Bynum’s portrayal of Demp in “Outer Banks” represents one of his most substantial recurring roles to date. What began as a single-episode appearance expanded into a six-episode arc, thanks to his compelling performance. The show, which follows a group of teenagers searching for lost treasure, has consistently topped Netflix’s viewing charts, with Season 4 attracting over 23 million views in its first two weeks.

To bring Demp to life, Bynum developed a distinct character complete with a gravelly voice, limp, and semi-closed eye – a departure from his typical roles in medical and legal dramas. “You’re developing a relationship with these actors but also a character relationship with their characters,” Bynum explains of his approach to the role.

A Legacy of Performance

Looking Ahead

As Bynum prepares to retire from teaching and pursue acting full-time, his role in “Outer Banks” represents a meaningful homecoming to South Carolina. His journey from creating police training videos to becoming a recurring character in one of Netflix’s most popular series exemplifies the power of perseverance and dedication in the entertainment industry.
