From Publicist to Author: Dan Harary proves great stories can come from anywhere

You don’t need a writing degree to be the author of your own story. Everyone has unique life experiences, and sometimes those experiences provide the most authentic inspiration for writing. Dan Harary, a former Hollywood publicist turned author, is proof that you can turn your life’s journey into a compelling narrative, even without formal training in writing.

Harary, who spent years working in the entertainment industry, found himself at a creative crossroads during the Covid-19 pandemic. With his PR business slowing down, he saw an opportunity to explore a new passion—writing. His first book, Flirting With Fame, became an autobiography of sorts, filled with personal anecdotes from his years working with celebrities in Hollywood.

“During the Covid era, my PR business slowed down greatly, so I decided to pursue creative writing for myself,” Harary explains. “The first book I wrote was a review of my long career of working with celebrities in film, TV, and music, called Flirting With Fame. I just sat down every day for six straight months and wrote down all of my celebrity interaction stories, in chronological order, as best as I remembered them. Since these were true stories, I simply had to challenge my brain to remember stuff.”

Harary’s journey is a reminder that everyone has a story to tell, and sometimes the most powerful narratives are the ones based on our personal experiences. Writing can be a therapeutic way to reflect on the past and transform those reflections into something creative and inspiring for others.

Drawing inspiration from one’s own life can be a powerful tool, but it doesn’t stop there. Harary continued his writing journey, moving from memoir to fiction with his latest novel, FIVE. The novel shows how personal experiences, imagination, and creativity can merge to create something unique. For Harary, the idea for FIVE came from a mix of life experiences, dreams, and creative brainstorming.

“My creative thinking for a storyline was a true amalgam of thinking the word FIVE was powerful, conceiving a character whose nickname could be Five, remembering once being told by a psychic that I was a famous actor in the Hungarian theater in the 1870s, and then marrying the idea of ‘what if the world’s biggest music star was secretly a serial killer at night’? All of those threads melted together when I developed the storyline for my newest novella, FIVE,” Harary shares.

Harary’s approach to writing demonstrates that stories can emerge from anywhere—the memories we hold, the dreams we have, and even the questions we ponder. His ability to weave various threads of thought into one cohesive narrative is a skill anyone can develop, regardless of their background.

This process of self-reflection and creativity raises an important question for aspiring writers: What kind of story do you want to tell? Each person’s life, with its highs and lows, is filled with unique moments that can be turned into something meaningful. You don’t need to have an extraordinary life to create a compelling story. Sometimes, it’s about finding the magic in the ordinary, using your personal journey as a guide to shape a new chapter.

As Harary shows, the writing process doesn’t have to be daunting. Whether you’re writing a memoir, a novel, or even a short story, it’s about sitting down and getting the words on the page. “I just sat down every day for six straight months,” he recalls, proving that dedication, more than anything else, is key to becoming an author.

So, what kind of story do you want to tell? Whether it’s a reflection of your own experiences or a leap into fiction, the narrative is yours to create. Harary’s journey from publicist to author serves as an inspiring example that no matter where you start, you have the power to write your own story. All it takes is the courage to begin.
