The very talented Maya Ixta Delgado is carving out a name for herself in the music world. Her new single “Count One It’s Me” is a refreshing upbeat single encouraging her peers to forge their own path in the world. A singer/songwriter as well as an actress, Maya is the total package. She writes with a voice that relates to her audience in a new and profound way. Maya took time out of her busy schedule for an interview about her career so far and her plans for 2024.
1. Tell us about your latest single “Count One It’s Me”.
“Count One It’s Me” is an upbeat pop/alternative single with a lot of bass, electric guitar, background harmonies, and ad-libs. I wrote this song with two other amazing artists, KTJ + Carly. Many young people measure importance based on popularity, friend groups, and other people’s opinions. “Count One It’s Me” is about choosing your unique path.
2. How do you prepare to record a single?
It depends on the song and the vibe I wanna create for it. Sometimes I already have the whole song written before I go into the recording studio so I just work on the production aspect with my producer. We then dedicate a session to record the song. Other times, I write with a partner and we work on production and writing the song simultaneously. Once I have a baseline I like, I go back and record over the produced track.
3. How much rehearsal time is there between writing your music and recording it?
The process is different for every song. However, I always practice different ways to sing a line. Before I have a session, I warm up my voice, sing the song in different ways to the track, and then I listen back to my vocals to determine what I like and what I want to change.
4. What do you love most about making music?
I love the writing process. I look forward to discovering how my songs make people feel. During the writing process, I’m presenting my feelings and thoughts to the world through a melody and I hope it resonates.
5. What’s the craziest thing that happened during a live performance?
I started performing again after Covid restrictions were lifted. One time, I performed an original song titled “Say You’re Mine ” and I asked the audience to sing the last part of the song with me. When it came time for them to sing the verse with me, they sang it loudly and perfectly and hearing people sing a song I worked so hard on during covid was amazing! I wrote this song on my couch near the window in my bedroom on my ukulele and I never thought other people would ever hear that song. It was one of the most rewarding moments I’ve had on stage.
6. What do you hope people will take away from listening to your music?
I hope that anyone who listens to my music is able to relate to my stories. I hope they know they are understood through my music. Everyone has a unique perspective and I want anyone who has had similar experiences to know there is someone out there who gets them!
7. What are your goals for 2024?
I’m releasing an E.P later this year that I’m really excited about titled “Diary Entrees”. One of my goals is to make this EP the best it can be, especially because I’ve had this idea for a really long time. I can’t wait to see it come to life. I’m also releasing more bilingual (Spanish) singles this year and working on expanding to the Spanish-speaking market.
