Honors this year were bestowed upon Dr. Ehren Yablon, Elizabeth NJ, for demonstrating outstanding professionalism, compassion and dedication with respect to the care and treatment of animals in a volunteer capacity. Through his volunteer work, the Elizabeth veterinarian has received a Community Outreach Award.
Dr. Ehren Yablon, a veterinarian at the Elizabeth Veterinary Hospital in Elizabeth, has received the Community Outreach Award for his work in the community in helping stray animals be mended to health.
“I’ve been doing this for three years or so,” said Yablon. “It started out kind of small and has escalated.”
His program, stray to spay, helps animals in the union county area. Through Animal Control, Yablon and other veterinarians are contacted to provide support for the stray and wounded animals. Through their support, they provide rehabilitation, food, and spay and neuter services until an animal is ready to be adopted.
“What stray to spay does is donate out professional services, pay for the medical care and rehabilitate that pet until it’s deemed adoptable and healthy, and then it goes back up for adoption,” said Yablon.
“It’s a privilege to work with these pets and in this setting and community that I do,” said Yablon. “They’re amazing pets, they’re very grateful and thankful for the things that we do; for that, I couldn’t ask for a better job. “Animals are getting injured every day, and every day they need to consult a veterinarian. That is what we are here for.”
Dr. Yablon says that behind parasites, the most common injuries are fractured legs due to car injuries. You might say that Dr. Yablon practices volunteerism full time and when he has a moment or two left in the day he practices veterinary medicine. This is stretching reality some, but it is an indication of his dedication as a volunteer.
As a solo practitioner, he continues to be active with the local Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, where for the past seven years he has routinely provided veterinary care for and his assistance with the animals. And since 2005, Dr. Yablon has found homes for more than 300 dogs and cats–and most often after he has given them necessary medical care and surgical attention at his own expense.
