In The DM’s Episode 6: YKJay Speaks on Growth, Confidence, and Finding His Sound

In a world where talent is everywhere but authenticity stands out, rising artist YKJay is carving his own lane with a sound rooted in versatility, energy, and real-life growth. Hailing from Long Beach, California, his journey into music wasn’t forced—it was discovered. In this episode of In The DM’s, YKJay opens up about his beginnings, his sound, and the mindset shift that shaped the artist he is today.

Getting Introduced to YKJay

For those discovering you for the first time, how would you introduce yourself and your music?

My name is YKJay, I’m an artist from Long Beach, CA. I started my music journey in 2020 with my first release being a freestyle over a song by 1takejay called “Arco.” I make hip-hop and occasionally R&B, but hip-hop is my main genre.

From Passion to Purpose

What initially drew you to music, and when did you decide to pursue it seriously?

I always had a love and passion for music. I would write to instrumentals here and there for fun with no intention of actually being an artist. In 2019, I let one of my friends hear something I wrote and they convinced me to go to the studio and record it. The following year is when I dropped my first project “Just An Artist”—that’s when I knew I wanted to take music seriously.

Defining His Sound

How would you describe your sound, and what makes it distinct from everything else out right now?

I would say my sound is a mix of a vibe and up-tempo. I have a versatile sound—some songs may put you in a vibey mood, and others are perfect for pre-games or parties. What separates me is my tone and flow. When you hear a YKJay song, you know it’s YKJay. My sound is very different from everyone else.

Growth & Evolution

What’s a version of yourself you had to leave behind to become the artist you are today?

I’ve outgrown the version of myself that lacked confidence and hesitated to be outgoing. Back then, I hadn’t fully recognized my potential or everything I was capable of.

Final Thoughts

YKJay’s story is a reminder that sometimes all it takes is one moment—one push—to step into your purpose. With a growing catalog and a clear sense of identity, he’s proving that confidence and consistency are just as important as talent.
