Valid takes viewers on a journey through Eastern Europe with his new tour documentary ‘PLACES’

When music travels, it carries more than sound- it carries stories, legacies, and the weight of identity. That’s exactly what Detroit emcee Valid set out to explore with PLACES, a striking new documentary that follows his journey through Eastern Europe with the legendary DJ Head. Directed by Katarina Radmilović and produced in collaboration with Valternativa Records, this isn’t your typical tour film- it’s a rhythmic, emotional, and cultural passage through the Balkans that redefines what hip-hop can be.

For Valid, this wasn’t just another stop on the tour circuit. Born in the U.S. to Serbian parents, PLACES represents a return to his ancestral roots- a chance to bring his art full circle. As he moves through Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Slovenia, and beyond, each location becomes more than a backdrop- it becomes a character in his story. In Valjevo, Serbia, we meet Vlada Stojanović, co-founder of Valternativa Records, who plays a crucial role in further immersing Valid to the culture of Eastern European hip-hop. Their connection- sparked years earlier through Ma Dukes, the mother of the late J. Dilla- feels serendipitous, but it’s also part of a broader narrative: one where hip-hop becomes a vessel for global connection.

At the heart of PLACES is the powerful juxtaposition of Detroit’s soulful, gritty hip-hop with the rich, often underrepresented musical traditions of the Balkans. Valid and DJ Head do more than perform- they collaborate, listen, and absorb. Whether it’s in intimate club sets or large festival stages, the energy is raw, reciprocal, and undeniable. What’s remarkable is how familiar Valid’s music is to the audiences abroad. In one moment, fans rap his lyrics word for word; in another, local emcees bring their own flavor, weaving Slavic rhythms into boom-bap beats. It’s clear: the language of hip-hop needs no translation.

PLACES isn’t flashy- it’s honest, human, and full of texture. We see candid exchanges with Balkan artists who’ve shaped the region’s scene, sharing their stories and paying homage to a genre that helped them find voice. We witness street-level culture, from food stalls and city squares to green rooms. These aren’t just filler moments- they’re the connective tissue that binds the tour into a shared experience of belonging. And amidst all the handshakes and head-nods, there’s an underlying theme: music as a mirror of identity. For Valid, performing in the land of his heritage means confronting the complexity of diaspora- of being from a place, yet not entirely of it. That tension, beautifully unspoken in the film, becomes its emotional core.

Where many music documentaries focus on spectacle, PLACES chooses depth. It’s a slow burn in the best way, offering viewers time to sit with each scene, each sound, each story. There’s joy, sure. But there’s also reverence- for culture, for history, and for the roads that led here. It’s not just about the music- it’s about what music makes possible. PLACES is about legacy, resilience, and rediscovery. It’s about how art can reconnect us with where we came from, even as it pushes us forward.

Watch PLACES to see hip-hop as it lives beyond borders- raw, real, and resoundingly human.
