Artist Spotlight: An Interview with Villanova
1. How did Villanova come together, and how did you find your current lineup?
Villanova began when the original three members—Charlie (Drums), Sean (Guitar), and Brianna (Bass)—met through a mutual guitar teacher in Chester. After playing a few local gigs, we faced a challenge when Brianna had to leave for university. We found our new bassist, Taylor, through a friend of Sean’s at college, and she’s now a permanent member of the band.
2. Where did the name “Villanova” come from, and what does it mean to you?
The name Villanova has a couple of influences. It comes from the Jimi Hendrix song “Villanova Junction,” but it also ties back to a previous name of a band that Sean knew. The original three band members picked the name from a list of many, and we all agreed Villanova was simple, interesting, and unique. It’s got a strong, singular vibe that we feel represents us well.
3. How would you describe your music, and what artists inspire your sound?
We’d describe our music as a fusion of classic Funk and Disco grooves, with the raw energy and blazing guitar solos of 70s/80s rock. Our primary inspirations come from bands like Chic, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and The Funkadelics. The blend of those sounds shapes the energy and tone of everything we do.
4. What does it mean to you to perform at Big Condo Records Weekender, and how does this experience help you grow as a band?
We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to perform at Zanzibar for Big Condo Records. It’s a venue we’ve visited many times to see other bands, so being able to perform there feels really special. It opens up the chance to play alongside fantastic musicians, which helps us grow and become better performers. The inspiration we draw from others who are just starting their careers is always fresh and exciting. It pushes us to continue evolving.
5. What’s been your most memorable gig so far, and why?
Our most memorable gig would have to be when we headlined Big Condo Records for the first time at Round The Corner in Liverpool. The crowd was amazing, and we received praise from other musicians. The energy in the room was electric! However, our most surreal moment so far has been the first time we professionally recorded our first 4 original songs. It was a dream come true for us, and it felt like a huge milestone in our journey.
6. What’s next for Villanova, and what can fans expect in the near future?
We’re always writing new original material and are incredibly close to releasing our debut single—hopefully this summer! We’re also on track to finish our debut album in the coming months if everything goes as planned. One thing’s for sure: we’ll never stop performing. Playing live is our favorite part of making music, and we can’t wait to see what opportunities come our way as we continue our journey.
